Col. Claude D. Mozley Jr., 79, of the 600 block of Sign Pine Road died Nov. 3, 1997, in a Suffolk hospital.
Born in Douglasville, Ga., he retired as a colonel from the U.S. Air Force after 32 years of service. He also retired as a ROTC instructor at Deep Creek High School, Chesapeake Public School System. He was a member of the Chesapeake Lions Club. Col. Mozley was a graduate of the University of Georgia and George Washington University where he received his master's degree. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II, Vietnam War and the Korean conflict.
During his flying career Col. Mozley flew more than 7,000 flying hours of which more than 500 hours were combat. While in Vietnam he was commander of the advisory group working with the Vietnamese 23rd Fighter Wing and flew more than 100 combat missions in the Vietnamese jet, F-5 ``Freedom Fighter.''
In his distinguished career, Col. Mozley was decorated many times. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, and Air Medal with Seven Oak Leaf Clusters.
Survivors include his wife, Susanne M. Mozley; a daughter, Lind Mozley-Sawyer of Chesapeake; a son, Claude D. Mozley III of Rome, Ga.; two grandchildren, Courtney Sawyer and Cassie Sawyer, both of Chesapeake; and his former wife, Elizabeth Wessinger of Montgomery, Ala.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel. Burial will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Full military honors will be accorded at the graveside. Memorial donations may be made to Equi-Kids of Virginia Beach.
