JAMES STATEN

James Staten of the 600 block of Freedom Ave. died Nov. 3, 1997, in his home.

Born in Portsmouth, he retired as a packer and crater and a Union Steward from Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 33 years of service. He also retired as a custodian from Truxton Elementary School, Portsmouth City Public School System. He was a member and twice past master of Truxton Lodge No. 199, Order of Masons and other higher Masonic orders. Mr. Staten was a founding member of the Cavalier Manor Senior Citizens, a member of Central Civic Forum, Cavalier Manor United Civic League, Portsmouth Chapter, N.A.A.C.P., and a former manager of the Portsmouth Eagles baseball team. He was a member and male usher of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Portsmouth.

Survivors include his wife, Sophia B. Staten; two daughters, Shirley Auston and Margaret Staten, both of Portsmouth; a stepdaughter, Esther Crocker of Chesapeake; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a host of great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a niece, Louise Boyd of Orlando, Fla.; from the first marriage, a brother-in-law, Leondias Campbell, and a sister-in-law, Peggy Campbell of Orangeburg, S.C.; from the second marriage, brother-in-law, Allen Bell, of Baltimore, Md.; great-nieces and nephews, cousins, other in-laws and friends. He was predeceased by a daughter, Helen Cummings, and a son, Edward Staten.

A funeral will be held at noon Saturday in Ebenezer Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Ben A. Beamer Sr. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Portsmouth, with Masonic honors.
