A look at results of Tuesday's major races and ballot propositions around the nation:
GOVERNOR
NEW JERSEY: Incumbent Republican Christie Whitman stayed in office with a razor-thin victory over Democratic state Sen. Jim McGreevey.
VIRGINIA: Republican Jim Gilmore, former attorney general, easily defeated Democrat Don Beyer, the state's lieutenant governor. Gilmore succeeds Republican Gov. George Allen, barred by law from seeking a second term.
CONGRESS
13th District on New York's Staten Island: Republican City Councilman Vito Fossella defeated conservative Democratic Assemblyman Eric Vitaliano. Fossella succeeds Susan Molinari, who resigned to become a TV anchor.
MAYOR
Atlanta (nonpartisan): Incumbent Bill Campbell and City Council President Marvin Arrington will meet in a Nov. 25 runoff. Campbell led all nine challengers, but didn't win a majority.
Boston: Democratic incumbent Thomas Menino, who was unopposed, won a second term.
Cleveland (nonpartisan): Incumbent Michael White easily defeated City Council member Helen Knipe Smith.
Detroit (nonpartisan): Incumbent Dennis Archer won a second term.
Houston (nonpartisan): Former drug czar Lee Brown and businessman Rob Mosbacher will meet in a December runoff after neither won a majority.
Miami (nonpartisan): Incumbent Joe Carollo and ex-mayor Xavier Suarez will meet in a runoff on Nov. 13 because neither won a majority. Carollo nearly won outright with 49.6 percent of the vote.
Minneapolis: Democratic incumbent Sharon Sayles Belton defeated Independent Barbara Carlson, ex-wife of Gov. Arne Carlson.
New York City: Republican incumbent Rudy Giuliani won easily over Democrat Ruth Messinger.
Pittsburgh: Democratic incumbent Tom Murphy easily defeated Republican Harry Frost.
Seattle (nonpartisan): Port Commissioner Paul Schell easily defeated Councilman Charlie Chong. Incumbent Norm Rice declined to run again.
St. Paul, Minn.: Incumbent Norm Coleman, who switched to the GOP last year, defeated Democratic state Sen. Sandy Pappas.
STATEWIDE PROPOSITIONS
Maine: Rejected industry-backed rules on clear cutting of forests. Rejected granting voting rights to mentally ill people with guardians.
New York: Rejected a measure authorizing $2.4 billion in bonds for school construction. Rejected calling a convention to rewrite state constitution.
Oregon: Overwhelmingly approved keeping the nation's only law permitting assisted suicide.
Washington: Rejected a measure to legalize medical use of marijuana and other drugs. Rejected requiring trigger locks on handguns and safety courses for owners. Rejected a measure barring employment discrimination based on sexual orientation. Rejected allowing workers to keep their doctor if they change health plans.
LOCAL PROPOSITIONS
Houston: Rejected a measure to repeal affirmative action awarding of city contracts.
Minneapolis and Pittsburgh areas: Minneapolis voters overwhelmingly approved a measure requiring a citywide referendum before more than $10 million in tax money may be spent on a stadium. In western Pennsylvania, voters rejected increasing sales taxes to pay for two new stadiums.
Orange, Calif.: Overwhelmingly supported a school board's decision to drop bilingual education.
Window Rock, Ariz.: Navajos in Arizona, Utah and New Mexico voted down a measure to bring casinos to America's largest Indian reservation. KEYWORDS: ELECTION
