TAX-HATING VOTERS DISBAND A SMALL APPALACHIAN TOWN

Virginia voters showed their disdain for the car tax by electing a Republican governor who promised to get get rid of it. Voters in Castlewood took the tax revolt a step farther.

The townsfolk were so tired of taxes, fees and traffic tickets that they decided Tuesday to dissolve their government. No more town, no more town taxes.

``The town should never been formed in the first place and we don't want it,'' said Mayor Roy Castle, who was elected last spring by promising to lead the anti-government revolt. ``It was double taxation without representation.''

Nearly all 2,800 adults in the town voted on the referendum. The unofficial results were 749 votes in favor of discarding the town charter and 622 against.
