HOPE J. DUKE

Hope Jones Duke, 102, died Nov. 6, 1997, in the Churchland House.

Born in Atlanta, Ga., she was the widow of Fred A. Duke, the former mayor of Portsmouth, and a retired school teacher for Portsmouth Public Schools. She was a member and elder of Green Acres Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Duke was also a member of the Elizabeth River Garden Club. She graduated from Florida State College with a bachelor of science degree.

Survivors include her daughter, Hope D. Beck and her husband, Robert Beck, of Newport News; six grandchildren, Betsy Duke and her husband, Larry Harcum, Mary Worsley and her husband, Larry, Lee Hanes and her husband, Robert, Margaret B. Pritchard, Jane B. Beck, Catherine Swetnam and her husband, Rex; five great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Anne D. Duke. She was preceded in death by two sons, Fred Duke Jr. and Lee B. Duke.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in Green Acres Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Walter C. Hunting. Burial will be private. Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
