HELEN L. NEWMAN

Helen L. Newman, 79, of the 500 block of Dune St. died Nov. 6, 1997, in her home.

Mrs. Newman was a native of Turrell, Ark., and a teacher. She recieved her associate's degree from the Norfolk division of William and Mary and her bachelor of science degree with the first graduating class of education at Old Dominon College and was elected into Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She received her master's in education at the College of William and Mary.

Mrs. Newman retired from teaching after having taught the 4th grade and remedial subjects and study habits at Norfolk State University and Old Dominion University for 10 years.

Mrs. Newman was a member of Brentwood Baptist Church and very active in the Mission Friends of the church. She was a member of the Social Order of the Beauceant, Norfolk Assembly No. 235, the Devon Manor Garden Club, the Norfolk Federation of Garden Clubs, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association and a charter member of Delta Sigma Lambda Sorority.

Mrs. Newman is survived by her husband, James Francis Newman; a sister, Laura B. Evans of Florida; two nieces, Laura Lynn Evans and Cathy E. Wichman of Florida; cousins, Marion, Jessie and Eva Baker of Virginia Beach. She was predeceased by her mother, Laura B. Barkley. Mrs. Newman will always be remembered for thinking of others before herself.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in Brentwood Baptist Church by the Rev. John D. Sykes Sr. Memorial gifts may be made to the Haven Family Center, 131 D View Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23503 or a charity of choice. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is handling arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
