SENATE CONFIRMS FRIEDMAN FOR U.S. JUDGESHIP IN NORFOLK

Virginia Beach Circuit Judge Jerome B. Friedman was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Friday to fill a vacant federal judgeship in Norfolk.

Friedman, 54, won unanimous approval for the district court vacancy created late last year when Judge Robert G. Doumar became a senior, or part-time, judge.

Friedman has been Virginia Beach's chief judge since 1994, having been named to the Circuit Court in 1991 by then-Gov. L. Douglas Wilder. From 1985 until his move to the Circuit Court, he was a judge in the city's Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.

President Clinton nominated Friedman to replace Doumar last March. His nomination, recommended by U.S. Sen. Charles S. Robb, was not controversial but was delayed for months in the Senate Judiciary Committee as Republicans and Democrats scrapped over many court vacancies.

Friedman is a New Jersey native who moved to Norfolk with his family as a child. He graduated from Granby High School and received a bachelor's degree in business from Old Dominion University. He is a graduate of the Wake Forest University law school. KEYWORDS: APPOINTMENT JUDGE
