Nov. 14 will be John Paul C. Hanbury Day in Portsmouth and Norfolk.
Portsmouth Mayor Jim Holley and Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim proclaimed the day to coincide with Hanbury's being presented the Noland Medal by the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects. Hanbury, a Portsmouth native, will be receiving that award Friday in Richmond.
Hanbury's name has been synonymous with historic preservation in this region for 40 years. He was instrumental in Portsmouth's community effort to save the 1846 Courthouse and convert it into an arts center. That led to the designation of Olde Towne as a historic site.
Hanbury led the architectural team involved in saving the Wells Theater in downtown Norfolk, home of the Virginia Stage Company.
