WAYNE E. SPENCE

Wayne E. Spence, U.S. Navy retired (AFCM-CMC), 63, died Nov. 7, 1997, in a local hospital.

Mr. Spence was born in Orrtanna, Pa. He was the son of the late James Edward Spence and Gladys Kime Spence. Mr. Spence was a veteran of the United States Navy with 31 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled Veterans Association. And while being a member of too many clubs and organizations to mention, the most important to him where the Masons and the Shriners. While serving in the military he was an umpire for more than 10 years at Oceana Naval Air Station, where he umpired for sports such as volleyball, football, baseball and softball.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Spence; a daughter, Pat Sheets and her husband, Clarence, of Chula Vista, Calif.; four grandchildren, Richard Sheets of San Diego, Calif., Laura Sheets McCormick of El Cajon, Calif., Cindy Sheets Dabbs and her husband, Darrell, of Pax River, Md., Lisa Sheets Bourgeois of Chula Vista; eight grandchildren, Richelle Sheets, Tricia McCormick, Katie McCormick, Brian, D.J., and Elizabeth Dabbs, Joshua and Christopher Bourgeois; five brothers, Harmon Spence and his wife, Linda, Omer Spence and his wife, Virgie, Marlin Spence, Ralph Spence, and Cloyd Spence all of Pennsylvania; three sisters, Mary, Hope, and Jean. Honored guests and friends include Mrs. Harvey, Aubrey Priddy Sr. and Aubrey Priddy Jr. and families, the Chaplain family, the Lawson family, Master Chief Buschy and family, Frank Godfrey and family, Judith Thomas and family, Peter Montilla and family, Dr. Kim Voss, Chris and Pam and family, Jim and Carol Echols and family, Suzanne Goldsticker and her friend, Sal; and many other friends too numerous to list.

A chapel service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oceana Naval Air Station by Chaplain Lt. Cmdr. Olric R. Wilkins. Burial will be at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends today at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad or to The Shriners (for crippled children). H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
