Alberta Phelps Howell, 51, of the 700 block of Round Bay Road died Nov. 10, 1997, in a local hospital.
Born in Norfolk, she had retired as a teacher from the Norfolk Public School System after 30 years of service. She was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Usher Board. She was a member of Education Association of Norfolk and the National Education Association. Mrs. Howell was the daughter of the late Vista K. Johnson and the late John B. Phelps.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph Morris Howell; a daughter, Gay Howell Jefferson of Charleston, S.C.; two sisters, Florence P. Glasper of Chesapeake and Mildred Ann Ramsey of Portsmouth; two brothers, Henry Bernard Phelps of Syracuse, N.Y., and Darnell Johnson of Chesapeake; two grandchildren; seven nieces, a nephew; and a host of family and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in First Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk, by Dr. J.L. White. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Hale Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Education Association of Norfolk, Scholarship Fund, Southern Shopping Center. The remains will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Friday.
