Arthur Lee ``Smokie'' Hitchman of the 5400 block of Scholarship Drive went home to be with the Lord quietly and peacefully on Friday, Nov. 7, 1997.
Born in North Hampton County, Va., he served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years and was a current employee for Gordon Paper Co. of Virginia Beach, where he was a tractor-trailer driver. He was also a former employee of the Naval Aviation Depot, Norfolk. Mr. Hitchman served the Tidewater Athletic Club as a football and basketball coach.
Survivors include two stepsons, Andre Hurdle and Antoine Hurdle, both of Virginia Beach; a brother, Zagala V. Brown of Chesapeake; a special friend, Laverne Hurdle of Virginia Beach; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Ruth and Clifford Hitchman.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in First Trinity A.M.E. Church, 1301 Elco St., Chesapeake, by the Rev. L.R. Daughtry. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Family and friends will assemble at 5407 Scholarship Drive, Virginia Beach, at 1 p.m. Thursday for the procession to the church. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Norfolk, is in charge of arrangements.
