Leroy Painter, 78, died Nov. 9, 1997, in Chesapeake General Hospital.
Known as ``Longhead'' and ``Painter,'' he was a civil service worker for the Norfolk Naval Supply Center for 35 years, retiring 22 years ago. Mr. Painter was born in Princess Anne County and was a member of St. John's AME Church, Virginia Beach. He was the widower of Helen Loftin Painter and the son of the late Maggie Gibbs Painter and John Painter.
Survivors include five daughters, Helen Ruth Jackson of Norfolk, Evelyn Virginia Willoughby of Chesapeake, Leona Charlotte Thorne, Celestine Estelle Painter, both of Norfolk, Darlene Edna Lassiter of Chesapeake; four sons, Theodore Painter of Petersburg, Allen Jackson Painter, Nathaniel Curtis Painter, Samuel John Painter, all of Norfolk; 25 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Maggie Painter; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his brothers, Willie Painter, Curtis Painter, Moses Painter and Morse Painter.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Friday in Hale Funeral Home, Norfolk, by Bishop Frank Jennings. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. The family will meet at the home of Evelyn Willoughby, 2025 Allison Drive, Chesapeake, for the procession. ILLUSTRATION: Photo KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
