MELZAR G. LAMAR

Retired U.S. Army Reserve Col. Melzar Gene LaMar, 69, died suddenly in his home Nov. 5, 1997.

Born in Norfolk, he was the son of the late Helen Woodhouse and Harry Melzar LaMar. After graduation from Maury High School in 1946, Col. LaMar enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for two years. Following honorable separation, he attended the Norfolk Division of William and Mary and Boston University. Col. LaMar was recalled to active duty in 1952, chosen for Infantry Officer Candidate School and commissioned 2nd lieutenant the following year. He was a qualified jumpmaster and served in airborne units. Additionally as a reservist, he graduated from the Special Warfare School in 1963 and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in 1975 and retired in 1988.

As a civilian, Col. LaMar worked for the City of Norfolk and retired as deputy commissioner of the Revenue in real estate section after 20 years of service. After retirement from the City of Norfolk, he was general manager for eight years for Richard R. Porter Companies at Norfolk International Airport.

Col. LaMar was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Military Order of World Wars, The American Legion, Special Forces Association and the Airborne Association.

Survivors are cousins, Lucy Greenwell Foster and Ann Greenwell of Virginia Beach, Emma Greenwell Ellis and Barbara Woodhouse Aufenger of Norfolk, Gloria Nichols Jones of Elizabeth City, N.C., William Greenwell of Hampton, James Woodhouse of Tennessee and many, many friends.
