SMALL BLUEFISH ENLIVEN THE DAY FOR PIER ANGLERS

Pier fishing was fair along the Dare coast Wednesday, with mainly small bluefish taken.

Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier landed small bluefish and very little else.

Bluefish weighing as much as 2 pounds, some nice sea mullet, and plenty of skates and sharks were taken on Avalon Pier.

Two big blues weighing about 12 pounds were decked on Nags Head Pier during the morning. Small blues, sea mullet and a few puppy drum were landed later in the day.

Jennette's Pier reported a 15-pound bluefish, three stripers weighing as much as 16 pounds and some small bluefish and mullet taken.

Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier caught small bluefish most of the day. Additionally, two striped bass were taken during the morning, the largest weighing 20 pounds, and a few small speckled trout were landed in the afternoon.

Fishing was slow south of Oregon Inlet, with throwback puppy drum and speckled trout decked on Rodanthe Pier.

Small puppy drum and flounder were released and scattered. Small bluefish were taken on Avon Pier.

Plenty of albacore, some small bluefish and small flounder were caught from Frisco Pier.

Small bluefish, scattered stripers and a few bottom fish were caught in the surf along the northern beaches and around Oregon Inlet.

Two 3-pound speckled trout, keeper stripers and small bluefish were taken by surfcasters from Rodanthe to Buxton.

Scattered stripers and small bluefish were beached at Cape Point, and speckled trout were landed in the surf near the lighthouse.

Fishing was slow along the beach from Ramp 55 to Hatteras Inlet.

Yellowfin tuna fishing was great off Oregon Inlet, with lots of 50-pounders taken along with a few wahoo.

Lots of big king mackerel were taken off Hatteras with as many as six citations registered per boat.

The water temperature was 59 degrees Wednesday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 64 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island.
