CALVIN W. SWOOPE JR.

Calvin W. ``Bill'' Swoope Jr., 65, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 1997, in DePaul Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with leukemia and heart disease.

A native of Norfolk, he retired from the City of Portsmouth. He was a new member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Virginia Beach. Bill was a golf enthusiast and a true Redskin fan. He graduated from Norview High School. Bill will be forever and deeply missed and loved by all.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife, Evelyn and 10 children including his sons, Calvin W. ``Billy'' Swoope III, Jeffrey T. Swoope, Matthew L. Swoope, Steven Staman; step-children, James ``J.O.'' Bock, John H. Bock, Jeffrey D. Bock, Julie A. Kindred, Jeri D. Conk and Joni D. Baker; two sisters, Virginia Ann Woodington and Sally P. Horner; four brothers, Gerald T. Swoope, Charles P. Swoope Sr., Louis W. Swoope, Raymond Swoope and their spouses; mother-in-law, Kathleen Brock; nine grandchildren, C. William Swoope IV, Jeffrey Swoope, Steven Swoope, Shannon Kindred, Joshua Kindred, Justin Baker, Kristin Baker, Atrayu Bock, Katherine Staman; and a host of nieces, nephews, and in-laws. He was predeceased in death by his parents, Calvin W. Sr. and Virginia Parks Swoope, a sister, Mary Lou Edwards, and grandson, Michael B. Swoope.

The viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today in Altmeyer Funeral Home, Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Kempsville and Princess Anne Road, by the Rev. William Starkey. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Family and friends will assemble in the church parish hall after the burial.
