MILESTONES

CHESAPEAKE

James E. Reece, a volunteer for several local charities, including We Care, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the American Heart Association, has been designated First Citizen of Chesapeake by the Chesapeake Jaycees.

Reece has been a member of We Care, which collects and delivers food, clothing and presents for families at Christmas, for 14 years.

He is a charter member of the Shorty Stallings Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships for high school students.

He helped found the Sharon Carey Fund, which raises money for cancer research, and made its first donation, his real estate commission check from the sale of a house.

Reece has been a driver for Meals on Wheels and a volunteer for the Sheriff's Barbecue.

He has been a volunteer for nine years at such events as the Big Brothers/Big Sisters bowling fund-raiser, the Adopt-a-Highway program and Paint Your Heart Out Chesapeake.

Reece has been a volunteer for the Chesapeake chapter of the American Heart Association since 1995 and became its vice president this year.

He was chairman of the association's annual golf tournament in 1996 and 1997 as well as for the 1996 Cardiac Arrest event and Heart Walk.

Reece, who lives with his wife, Laura, on Gloria Drive, has been a sales associate for Womble Realty for nine years.

NORFOLK

Edward Lucas of Norfolk has been awarded the Silver Magnolia Blossom Award by the Confederate Air Force for his contribution to the local chapter, the Old Dominion Squadron. He was cited for his participation in all of its activities, including aircraft restoration and maintenance.

Lucas received the award recently at the organization's general membership meeting during AIRSHO '97 in Midland, Texas.

The Distinguished Service Award went to John Anderson of Chesapeake for exceptional service to the Confederate Air Force.

The local chapter is based at Chesapeake's Municipal Airport. The chapter is one of 80 units in 22 states and several countries operating more than 130 vintage World War II aircraft. Now in its 40th year, the Confederate Air Force has about 8,000 volunteer members. The organization is dedicated to preserving the military aviation heritage represented by World War II aircraft and the personal memories of the men and women who built, serviced and flew them.

PORTSMOUTH

Pamela F. Oksman of Portsmouth recently was elected president of the Virginia Academy of School Psychologists.

Oksman, a clinical psychologist at the Family Development Institute in Chesapeake, is currently serving as the Virginia Delegate to the National Association of School Psychologists.

Oksman, wife of Portsmouth City Attorney Tim Oksman, is a past chairman of the Virginia Board of Psychologists, with which she was a board member for nine years. During that time, she also was appointed to represent the board on the Virginia Board of Health Professions.

SUFFOLK

The Suffolk Rotary Club recently presented the Paul Harris Fellow Award to former Gov. Mills E. Godwin Jr.

Named for the founding father of the Suffolk Rotary Club, the award honored Godwin, a Chuckatuck native, for his record of service to the community, region and the commonwealth as a two-term Virginia governor, statesman and citizen.

Godwin's wife, Katherine, also was presented with a Paul Harris Fellow plaque, and together, the couple accepted one posthumously awarded to their daughter, Becky, who died many years ago.

VIRGINIA BEACH

Mary M. Heinricht, a Virginia Beach resident and champion of the environment, has been awarded the Conservation Medal by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The award recognizes people with distinguished conservation records.

Heinricht was instrumental in creating the Virginia Beach Agriculture Reserve Program, which pays rural property owners not to develop their land.

She also has worked with and/or received honors and awards from organizations such as the Nature Conservancy, the Chesapeake Bay Program Local Government Advisory Committee, the Elizabeth River Project, the Virginia Environmental Endowment and the Virginia Beach Clean Community Commission.
