Asked his thoughts on being the first probable victim along Hampton High and senior All-American quarterback Ronald Curry's expected victory tour, Green Run head coach Johnny White had a humorous answer.
``I'm glad we're in the playoffs, and I'm happy we're playing Hampton,'' White said of the two-time defending state champions, who have won 36 straight. ``For three years I've been paying to watch Curry play. I figure I've dished out $40 . . . for bad seats. This time, I get the best seat in the house for free.''
Now the emphasis moves to stopping Curry. White's plans?
``I've watched three game films on him, and I still don't know what we'll do,'' White said. ``If you let him stay in the pocket, he throws the ball better than anyone I've ever seen. If you blitz and make him scramble, he does that better than anyone I've ever seen. Seriously, who expects us to win? Even a betting man wouldn't bet on this.
``If we lose, we're just one of many. If we win, it's earth-shaking. For us, this game's a learning process. We're trying to get to the level of a Hampton. If you want to be the best, you have to play the best. This will help us in the future.'' ILLUSTRATION: Graphic
