NOLAND REPORTS OCTOBER SALES: Noland Co. reported October sales of $42.9 million, slightly below October 1996's $43 million. For the first 10 months of 1997, Noland reported sales of $393.6 million, 1 percent less than the $397.3 million total of the year-earlier period.

CHESAPEAKE CORP. COMPLETES PURCHASE OF ITS STOCK: Chesapeake Corp. in Richmond said it has completed purchase of 2 million shares of its common stock. The purchases included open market and privately negotiated transactions and were part of the plan announced in August for the investment of the net proceeds of the May 1997 sale of its West Point kraft products mill and associated assets. Chesapeake's board of directors has authorized the purchase of up to 500,000 additional shares of the company's common stock in open market purchases or negotiated transactions.
