When Brian Carroll dropped his name in a box for a chance to win a new truck, he didn't get his hopes up. But just before the last week's PBA finals at the Virginia Beach Pavilion, his name was picked. All he had to do was roll a strike - on national television.
``I was real happy. I had a feeling I could do it,'' Carroll said. ``I know I can throw a good ball. On the inside, my heart was just racing real fast for about an hour before.''
Carroll was the last of four contestants in the contest, and no one had succeeded in rolling a strike. But Carroll knocked down all 10 pins, and the 1998 F-150 Ford truck was practically his. Unfortunately, like most sweepstakes, this one had that ``little fine print.''
Carroll had to draw a name out of a barrel with contest entries from around the country. Then that name and his name were put in an envelope. Carroll had to pick again.
``I ended up picking the pen pal . . . the sweepstakes person,'' he said. ``It was a girl in Texas.''
Carroll rolled the strike, but someone else won the truck. He got to keep the ball he used, along with a shirt, towel and glove.
``Everybody thinks it was sort of a bad deal,'' Carroll said. ``But it was their rules.'' ILLUSTRATION: Graphic
