JOHN W. HOWARD

Retired U.S. Navy Capt. John William Howard, 85, of the 5300 block of Greenplain Road, passed away Nov. 13, 1997, from complications of pneumonia.

Capt. Howard was born in Hillsboro, Texas, and resided in Norfolk for more than 40 years. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated in the Class of 1934. After an illustrious 30-year Navy career, Capt. Howard retired in Norfolk.

Capt. Howard leaves four loving children, Ms. Janet Howard Jaffee of Norfolk, Mr. John Howard III of Grand Prairie, Texas, Charles Howard of Norfolk and Paul Howard of Fayetteville, N.C. He is survived by his two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Van Slyke of Wichita, Kansas, and Mrs. Thomasine Stewart of Houston. He was preceded in death by his wives, the former Dorothy Mahoney of Boston, and Mrs. Nellie Ford Howard, a native of Norfolk.

A graveside service with full military honors will be held at Hampton National Cemetery at 11 a.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, donations to the cancer fund or Alzheimer's Research would be greatly appreciated.

As his sister Thomasine said, ``We were so lucky to have had him in our lives. The world is a better place for his having been here.'' Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel, is handling arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
