ROY J. AYRES JR.

Roy J. Ayres Jr., 68, of the 4000 block of Magnolia Drive, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, in Maryview Nursing Care Center, Suffolk, following a lengthy illness with cancer. He was the son of the late Roy J. Ayres and Hilda Robins Ayres of Painter, Va.

Born on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, he was a longtime resident of Portsmouth, where he taught school for many years. He taught 26 years at Frederick Military Academy, where he served as director of instruction, head master and president. He also taught at Tidewater Community College Night School and was retired from the Portsmouth public school system.

Mr. Ayres graduated from Virginia Tech with a bachelor of science degree and a master's degree and did further graduate work at Old Dominion University. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, after which he was an officer in the National Guard.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyne Rippon Ayres; four children, Roy J. Ayres III, Sarah Ayres Boehling, Thomas Rooks Ayres and Maria Robins Ayres; grandchildren, Roy J. Ayres IV, Catherine Ayres, Richard Louis Boehling and Sarah Rippon Boehling. Also surviving are two adopted sisters and nieces, Margaret W. Parks and Deborah D. Atkinson; and an aunt, Nettie Dunton.

A funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, with the Rev. Anthony Canu officating. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Cape Charles Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cancer Treatment Center, Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth, Va. 23707. Arrangements are by Wilkins-Doughty Funeral Home, Cape Charles.
