An Elizabeth City man charged last week with the murder of a friend is fighting extradition to Virginia to stand trial.
Pasquotank County deputies arrested Roger William Stanley, 33, Friday, nearly five months after he flagged down Portsmouth police to get help for his companion, Lewis ``Eddie'' Roberts, 36, of Morgan's Corner.
Stanley told police Roberts had fallen and hit his head on a Portsmouth street, said Portsmouth police spokeswoman Lindsay Disbrow. Roberts was pronounced dead moments later at Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth.
Roberts' death on June 29 was ruled accidental until recent lab reports indicated that a blow to his head was not caused by a fall.
Stanley is in Albemarle District Jail under no bond until state authorities sign extradition papers. The process can take up to 90 days. KEYWORDS: MURDER
