Man rescued after
being abducted and
locked in car's trunk
A 32-year-old Portsmouth man was rescued from the trunk of his car early Saturday after a police sergeant observed a man standing behind the vehicle with blood on him, according to police spokeswoman Amber Whittaker.
The victim, whose name was not released, told police he was stopped at a red light in the 1200 block of South Street in the Ida Barbour public housing neighborhood when the man jumped in his car and threatened to shoot him.
The suspect reportedly forced the victim to drive to the 1100 block of Chisholm Circle, where the victim was robbed. The victim jumped from the car and ran but was chased down, assaulted and forced into the trunk, Whittaker said.
Police Sgt. T.J. Stenger freed the victim after arresting Anthony Demario Phillips, 18, of the 1100 block of Barbour Drive.
Phillips was charged with carjacking, abduction, robbery, malicious wounding, possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm.
The victim was treated for multiple wounds and contusions to his face and head at Maryview Medical Center, then released.
