ISAAC P. ROBERTS

Isaac Perkins Roberts, 86, of the 600 block of Piney Grove Road, died May 24, 1997.

He was born in Shawboro, Currituck County, N.C., April 3, 1911, one of 12 children of James M. and Ida Perkins Roberts, and grew up on a large farm in Currituck County, where they raised corn and soy beans. He was educated in Currituck County schools and graduated from Collier School of Embalming in New York City, N.Y. He was a licensed embalmer and funeral director in North Carolina and Virginia for 32 years and owned and operated a funeral home in Smithfield, Va., and later the Roberts Funeral Home in Kernersville. He was an avid collector of antique engines and cars and attended shows in Florida each year as long as his health permitted.

He was married June 4, 1943, to Bessie Cooke, who preceded him in death. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Bobbie Roberts of Kernersville; two grandchildren, Ashley Roberts of New York City and Kristy Roberts of Kernersville; two sisters, Doris Skiba and Ida Robertson, both of Shawboro, N.C.; and four brothers, Joel Roberts of Titusville, Fla., and Edward, Wilbert and Raymond Roberts, all of Shawboro.

A funeral was held at the Kernersville First Baptist Church and, following the service, at Mr. Roberts' request, his body was taken to the Main Street United Methodist Church Cemetery in a hearse pulled by two dapple gray horses. The hearse was once used regularly in Currituck County, N.C. Pierce Funeral Home handled the arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
