REDSKIN REPORT [BRIEFS]

Turner still fuming over Jones' sideline visit to hound refs

ASHBURN, Va. - The final score wasn't the only thing that upset Redskins coach Norv Turner last Sunday in Dallas.

Turner, a former Dallas assistant, was outraged by what he perceived as intimidation tactics toward the officials by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Jones left his box at Texas Stadium and went to the sidelines moments after the officials rescinded an interference penalty against Cris Dishman. And when he got there, he had a few words with several officials.

A few minutes later, the same officials made an 11-yard pass-interference call against Darrell Green, on a pass that appeared uncatchable - it was so far over Anthony Miller's head.

``Obviously, this is something we're going to talk about as an organization,'' Turner said. ``I can't go down to the 20 to talk about a call. No other coach can go down to the 20.''

Jones won't be rebuked by the league, spokesman Greg Aiello said, because there are no rules governing an owner's movement on the sidelines.

Jones, who says he only labeled the call ``b.s.,'' got a big laugh from Turner's frustration.

``If anyone believes that my presence on the sidelines had a bearing on the outcome of Sunday's game, then I'm flattered,'' Jones said. ``But we all know that wasn't the case.

``I do, however, understand Norv's frustration. I know that he compared Sunday's game to our loss at RFK in 1992. And those are the types of losses that can linger for a few days. We were on the same side for that one, and I know how much we all hurt after that game.''

Living without Shep

The league is supposed to rule today whether or not Dallas safety Omar Stoutmire will be fined for his hit on Redskins receiver Leslie Shepherd Sunday.

The blow, which came a second or two after Gus Frerotte's overthrown pass hit the turf, resulted in Shepherd suffering a broken wrist and dislocated elbow. He is out for the season.

Wednesday, the Redskins signed TE Dave Frisch to the active roster and placed Shepherd on injured reserve. Frisch, 6-7, 260 pounds, is in his sixth season and has played with Cincinnati, New England and Minnesota.

While Michael Westbrook and Henry Ellard will almost certainly start Sunday against the New York Giants, rookie Albert Connell will see a lot of action, too. Connell, a 6-foot, 184-pounder from Texas A&M who was a fourth-round pick, has played in just one game this season. In Washington's loss to Tennessee, Connell caught a 14-yard pass. He has been inactive every other week.

``I have a good feeling they're going to come to me a few times,'' Connell said. ``I don't think we're going to miss a beat because Shep's gone, but I have to be ready to do my share.''

Welcome to New York

The car that Giants coach Jim Fassel's wife Kitty had been driving was stolen a couple of weeks ago. It hasn't been recovered and probably won't be. Not that Fassel isn't trying.

Fassel doesn't know who stole the car, but he's talked to a prime suspect twice. Shortly after the auto disappeared, Fassel called his car phone and a man answered. Fassel asked who he was and what he was doing in his car.

The man denied stealing Fassel's car, and said that he had just purchased the phone from a stranger.

``I didn't believe him,'' Fassel said. ``I think he was sitting behind the wheel of my car.''

Quick kicks

The rest of Washington's early injury report: WR Alvin Harper, knee (out); DT Ryan Kuehl, ankle (doubtful); FB Larry Bowie, ankle (questionable); DE Jamal Duff, ankle; DE Kelvin Kinney, lower leg; P Matt Turk, thigh; C Jeff Uhlenhake (knee) and DT Marc Boutte, knee (all probable). . . .

Giants injuries: C Derek Engler, ankle, and C Brian Williams, eye, (out); LB Corey Miller, ankle (doubtful); RB Rodney Hampton, knee (doubtful). . . .

The Giants are second in the NFL with a turnover ratio of plus-13. The Redskins are tied for seventh in the league in the same category with a plus-6 ratio. . . . S Percy Ellsworth, a University of Virginia grad from Southampton High School, is tied for ninth in the NFC with three interceptions. . . .
