Not halfway through one school year, school folks have turned their attention to the next. The first public hearing on the public schools' 1998-99 operating budget - the one that pays for salaries and day-to-day expenses, not new buildings or equipment - is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 11, at 5:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers on the second floor of the Municipal Building at 441 Market St. It's immediately before the monthly School Board meeting at 7 p.m. Employee groups and the general public are invited.

A second hearing is scheduled for Feb. 12, 1998. For more information, call the School Board offices at 925-5500.

PORTSMOUTH

Portsmouth residents will have an opportunity to learn how to save money on college tuition and mandatory fees through the Virginia Prepaid Education Program at a public meeting Thursday, Dec. 4, at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be at Wilson High School's Little Theater. The program lets parents, grandparents and others prepay college tuition and mandatory fees at community collegesand four-year universities. It is open to children in the ninth grade or below, if the child or the purchaser is a resident of Virginia. The plan offers a variety of payment options and tax advantages. A representative from the trust fund will provide information about the program and answer questions. The deadline for enrollment is Dec. 15. For more information, call (888) 567-0540.

NORFOLK

The School Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at Ocean View Elementary School.

The informal session of the meeting begins about 5:30 p.m. and the formal session for voting begins later. The school is located at 9501 Mason Creek Road.
