SUFFOLK
The School Board has named Johnnie F. Edwards Jr. coordinator of pupil personnel and testing, replacing Melinda J. Boone, who is leaving to work for the Isle of Wight County public schools.
Edwards has been an elementary and high school teacher, an elementary and middle school principal and most recently was supervisor of student services at John F. Kennedy Middle School. As coordinator, Edwards will administer standardized tests and analyze results, compile school assessment measures, handle disciplinary hearings and oversee zoning changes.
VIRGINIA BEACH
Teachers and staff at Landstown Middle School have been recognized with a 1997 Excellence in Education Award by the College of Human Resources and Education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University for Landstown's extended school day program. The extended day increases student instructional time by 20 minutes through the volunteering of staff time.
Joan Bateman, a teacher at Corporate Landing Middle School, has been selected to present ideas on her innovative approach to integrating literacy skills with science instruction at the Virginia Beach Reading Council Conference.
Mike Videll and Joanne Rowe, teachers at Cox High School, presented their research at the 50th anniversary of the Maryland Association of Science Teachers. The two participated in a year-long study through Mount St. Mary's College and the National Science Foundation to develop mathematical modeling techniques to solve real world situations. Along with six other educators, they monitored the Piping Plover - a threatened species of shore bird - plotted its population and identified its main predators and hazards.
NORFOLK
Two Norfolk public school programs were recognized with 1997 Excellence in Education Awards by the College of Human Resources and Education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
The Starbase-Atlantis program was honored for exposing fifth-graders and their teachers to real-world, hands-on applications of math and science through astronomy, rocketry, the physics of flight and tours of Navy activities.
Norview High School's Learning While Serving program, a student-run community service project, was also recognized.
The conference honors innovative approaches to teaching and learning in the state's public schools and community colleges.
