CHARLES H. MONROE

Charles H. Monroe, 76, of the 2100 block of Jefferson St., died Nov. 22, 1997, in Maryview Medical Center.

Born in Wilmington, N.C., Mr. Monroe was a member and usher of Zion Baptist Church. He had retired from the Department of the Navy as an engineer after 36 years and was a former substitute teacher with the Portsmouth public schools. He was a former member of the Portsmouth School Board; former president of I.C. Norcom High School PTA; former president, Harrison Ward Civic League; and member of the Central Civic Forum, Engineers & Wives Club, Toastmasters and North Carolina A&T Alumni Association. He was a Navy veteran and an Army officer and veteran.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Bessie S. Monroe; a daughter, Mildred Council of Portsmouth; three sons, Charles N. (Jean) Monroe and Tyrone A. Monroe of Portsmouth, Dr. Quentin E. (Addie) Monroe of Fort Washington, Md.; three sisters, Catherine Davis and Margaret Jones, both of Wilmington, N.C., and Bessie Mabine of Baltimore; two brothers, Albert Monroe of Georgia, Ward Monroe of Goldsboro, N.C.; three grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. John M. Little. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park Mausoleum, Virginia Beach, with military honors.
