LAWRENCE M. SPADY

Lawrence Melvin ``Pete'' Spady Jr., 66, of 10296 Park St., died Sunday Nov. 23, 1997.

He was a native of Isle of Wight County and a 1953 graduate of Virginia Tech with a B.S. in architectural engineering. He was a member of the Golden Hokie Alumni Association. He retired as general construction manager of American Bridge, a division of U.S. Steel Corp. of Pittsburgh, Pa. Some of his major projects include: Vertical Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center; Standard Oil Building, Chicago; Astro Dome, Houston, Texas; Super Dome, New Orleans; New River Gorge Bridge, West Virginia; Sunshine Skyway, Tampa, Fla.; King Dome, Seattle, Wash.; and the Las Vegas Airport. After retiring in 1986, he represented the United Nations as a consultant and educator to the nation of India, at the Dept. of Engineering, Railroad Bridge Division.

Mr. Spady was a member of Battery Park Baptist Church, Kiln Creek Golf and Country Club, Newport News, Smithfield Downs Senior Men's Golf Association, and the O.A. Bloxom Sunday School Class. He was president of the Olde Towne Realty in partnership with East-West Partners in development of Gatlin Pointe South, Smithfield.

Mr. Spady was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence M. and Elizabeth Brock Bloxom Spady.

Survivors include his wife, Mollie Sue Koontz Spady; three daughters, Katharine Sue S. Klein of Phoenix, Ariz., Vivian Lee S. VanSelow and her husband, Duke, of Smithfield, Nancy Lynn S. Modlin and her husband, Brian, of Battery Park; two brothers, O.A. Spady of Battery Park, James W. ``Jimmie'' Spady of Battery Park; three grandsons, Brock William VanSelow, Tyler Lee VanSelow and John Devin Arnold.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Battery Park Cemetery by the Rev. Joe Olson. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, and suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Battery Park Baptist Church Youth Fund, 10309 Newport Street, Battery Park, Va. 23304.
