PORTSMOUTH

I.C. Norcom High opening delayed for construction

The new $40 million I.C. Norcom High School will not be open to students by Jan. 2, as planned.

Rock Bell, the city's engineer, said the school board decided last week to delay the school's opening until it is closer to completion.

School board members have not set another opening date, Bell said.

Local musicians will play at D.C.'s Kennedy Center

The Virginia Handbell Consort, a Portsmouth-based ensemble of Hampton Roads musicians, will play at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington on Dec. 11.

The consort will perform a pre-curtain concert in the Grand Foyer at 6 p.m. prior to the opening performance of the Joffrey Ballet's engagement there.

Local engagements for the Virginia Handbell Consort include: St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Norfolk, 6 p.m. Dec. 2; Knox Presbyterian Church, Norfolk, 6:30 p.m. Dec. 7; Baylake Methodist, Virginia Beach, 7 p.m. Dec. 13; Emmanuel Episcopal, Virginia Beach, 7 p.m. Dec. 14; Tallwood High School, Virginia Beach, 7 p.m. Dec. 14.

The concerts are free, but an offering will be taken.

VIRGINIA BEACH

Turkeys needed to feed the hungry on Thanksgiving

Three organizations are seeking donations of turkeys to feed the needy on Thanksgiving:

Mothers Inc., a resort-area organization that serves the homeless and needy, is holding its 11th annual turkey drive. Turkeys can be dropped off at 417 16th St. anytime through Thursday morning.

Honey Baked Ham is providing 10 turkeys for the annual Thanksgiving dinner sponsored by Christian Action at Open Door Chapel. The restaurant is collecting money to furnish 20 additional turkeys.

Contributions can be dropped off at the store, 4701 Virginia Beach Blvd., or at Tele-Video Productions, Pembroke Three Building, Suite 144.

Judeo-Christian Outreach Center, a homeless shelter near the Oceanfront, is collecting turkeys at at 1053 Virginia Beach Blvd.

Beach SPCA changes hours for the holiday week

The Virginia Beach SPCA will extend its hours to 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. today. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday. It will be closed Thursday.

Regular hours will resume Friday. Those hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday; and 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

SUFFOLK

Citywide prayer vigil, service begins today

The annual Citywide Prayer Vigil and Thanksgiving Service will be held today at Main Street United Methodist Church.

The prayer vigil will begin at 7:30 a.m. and continue until 7:30 p.m., when the Thanksgiving service begins.

City Councilman S. Chris Jones will deliver the opening prayer and benediction for the Thanksgiving service, which will include presentations by pastors, lay people and musicians.

A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
