WEEKEND FISHING

Ben Rough of Virginia Beach was a triple winner in two Hampton Roads striped bass tournaments over the weekend, pocketing $1,350.

He won the $1,000 top award in the inaugural Lynnhaven Marine Center Bayliner Rockfish Tournament with four fish totaling 89 pounds, 1 ounce. In addition, Rough earned $100 for the two-day contest's heaviest entry at 29-5.

Rough also took the $250 top award in a Sunday contest staged by the Tidewater Anglers Club of Norfolk. His fish's official weight was 29.10 pounds.

Elsewhere, Tom McCormick of Portsmouth earned three citation awards from the Virginia Fresh Water Fishing Program with catches at Lake Prince in Suffolk.

McCormick scored with an 8-5 largemouth bass, 4-2 chain pickerel and 1-4 yellow perch.

Dr. James C. Wright of Virginia Beach moved into a tie with Carolyn Brown, also from the Beach, in the race to become Angler of the Year in the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament. Each has citation-winning catches for 15 species. Wright added to his list in the past week with a 16-8 bluefish caught from the boat Therapy and a 10-0 tautog caught from the boat Cape Hatteras.

Elsewhere, John G. Wood of Edenton, N.C., released the first giant tuna of the season off Hatteras, a lunker estimated at 350 pounds. He was aboard the charter boat Chaser, skippered by Jim Loebsack.

Wood also scored on the trip with a 65-pound king mackerel, largest reported in North Carolina this season.

VIRGINIA BEACH OFFSHORE: Bluefish: Jim Clark, Virginia Beach, 18 pounds, 10 ounces, and Steve Wray, Virginia Beach, 16-1, both caught from the boat Outriggers; Kristin Jones, Chesapeake, 18-8, Four T's; Jacki Perry, Virginia Beach, 17-8, Milton Sykes Sr., Virginia Beach, 17-2, Jeanne Sykes, Virginia Beach, 17-0, and James Watson, Virginia Beach, 16-0, all from the 0 Four; William Beachum, Norfolk, 17-7, Rainbow; Don Myers, Virginia Beach, 16-8, Get the Net; and Rick House, Kitty Hawk, 16-0, no name on boat. Sea bass: Jonathan Carter, Virginia Beach, 5-9, Bobbi Lee.

VIRGINIA BEACH INSHORE: No outstanding catches reported.

CHESAPEAKE BAY BRIDGE-TUNNEL: Striped bass release: Sharon Reich, Virginia Beach, Day Late. Bluefish: Doug Cashwell, Virginia Beach, 16-0, Eight Up. Speckled trout: Allan Drewry, Chesapeake, 8-14, 6-12, no name; Mike Firestone, Virginia Beach, 8-5, Captain's Choice; Scott Cole, Virginia Beach, 7-4, Lectric Fisherman; and Allan Fidils, Chesapeake, 6-0, no name. Tautog: William Coss Davis, Chesapeake, 12-8, no name; and Daniel Lawrence, Chesapeake, 10-4, 9-10, Sea Weed.

EASTERN SHORE: No outstanding catches reported.

OUTER BANKS INSHORE: Striped bass: Dusty Rhodes, Kill Devil Hills, 47-0, caught from the surf. Striped bass release: Pat Bracher (2), Avon, N.C., surf; Randy Taylor (2), Avon, surf; and Lee Walton, Avon, surf. Red drum release: Missy Bracher (6), Avon, surf; Lee Walton (4), Avon, surf; Pat Bracher (4), Avon, surf; and Randy Taylor, Avon, surf. Bluefish: William N. Walker, Kill Devil Hills, 18-0, surf. Speckled trout: Eddie Reber Jr., Nags Head, 7-11, surf; and Kim Mosher, Buxton, N.C., 4-8, surf.

OUTER BANKS OFFSHORE: Wahoo: Clarence Munden, Elizabeth City, 58-0, Candlewick Lady. King mackerel: Michael Gilbert, Elizabeth City, 41-0, Jeff Witte, Virginia Beach, 40-0, and David Jacques, Chesapeake, 36-0, all from the Miss Hatteras; Donald Oden, Hatteras, 38-0, and Jeremy Shifler, Hatteras, 37-0, both Chaser.

FRESHWATER: Largemouth bass: Robert Whealton Jr., Chesapeake, 23 3/4 inches and 22 inches, both caught on Northwest River. Yellow perch: Paul Styron Jr., Portsmouth, 1-8, Lake Prince; and Pete Peterson, Virginia Beach, 1-7, Western Branch Reservoir. White perch: Dave Tucker, Chesapeake, 1-9 and 13 inches, Western Branch; Pete Peterson, Virginia Beach, 1-8, Western Branch; Paul Knowles, Suffolk, 1-5, Western Branch; and William Deal, Chesapeake, 13 inches, Western Branch.

TOURNAMENTS:

Results of the Virginia Bassmasters' tournament, held over two days on Kerr Reservoir: 1. Harold Delp, Portsmouth, 22 pounds, 15 ounces; 2. Ivan Morris, Virginia Beach, 17-9; 3. Jim Bass, Virginia Beach, 15-15. Non-boat owner: Tom Lindenmayer, Virginia Beach, 12-0. Lunker: Joe Lambert, Virginia Beach, 5-11.

Results of a largemouth bass tournament held Sunday out of Bob's Fishing Hole on the Northwest River (two-person team): 1. John Goodman and Todd Lane, Virginia Beach, 11.17 pounds. Lunker: Goodman, 3.67.
