Melvin Hawkins, athletic director at Northeastern High School, has resigned to devote more time to the classroom.
Hawkins, who began as athletic director in February, replacing Jerry McGee, teaches advance placement and honors U.S. history.
``I felt it was taking away from the classroom and that's where I need to be,'' Hawkins said. ``It was a lot more work than I anticipated.''
Hawkins' resignation will be effective Jan. 20.
The school is searching for a replacement.
