BASKETBALL

Norfolk's Thornton may be out for rest of Wolfpack's season

North Carolina State sophomore Damon Thornton of Norfolk may miss the remainder of the basketball season because of a broken right foot.

Coach Herb Sendek said the 6-foot-8 Thornton injured the foot in practice on Sunday.

``I don't know how much, if any, of our season would be left when he returns,'' Sendek said.

Ironically, Sendek feared in preseason Thornton might miss the season because of a hip injury suffered last year that caused him to miss the final nine games.

Thornton recovered much earlier than expected, though, and played in State's first three games although doctors were still monitoring his hip.

Thornton made the ACC All-rookie team last year, averaging 7 rebounds and 7.8 points per game.

If Thornton is out for the season he would be eligible for three more years under the NCAA's medical redshirt rules.

WRESTLING

G. Bridge's Fowler signs grant-in-aid with Virginia Tech

CHESAPEAKE - Great Bridge's Bruce Fowler has signed a wrestling grant to Virginia Tech. Fowler was 44-0 last season and won the state championship at 119 pounds.

``I was looking for a place where I would work hard and have good workout partners,'' Fowler said. ``I visited Tech twice and they offered me what I wanted.''

The Hokies are coached by Keith Mourlen, who was an assistant at Iowa when Great Bridge coach Steve Martin wrestled there. Christian Basnight, another former Wildcat, is on the Tech roster.

Fowler's career record at Great Bridge is 116-20. He was 5-2 in the AAU nationals last summer in Fargo, N.D.

He plans to wrestle at 130 this season.

SOCCER

Norfolk Academy grad named to all-region team

Angela Hucles of Virginia, a sophomore out of Norfolk Academy, was named to the All Mid-Atlantic Region women's soccer team. Hucles, who led the Cavaliers in scoring with 18 goals and five assists, was one of two U.Va. players named to the first team. The other was junior defender Karem Esteva.

Jessalyn Martin, a sophomore defender from Old Dominion, was named to the second team.
