ALAN FRIEDMAN

Alan Friedman, 51, of the 200 block of Moore Ave. died Nov. 26, 1997, in his home.

Mr. Friedman was a native of Norfolk, a former resident of Atlanta and recently lived in Vienna. Mr. Friedman was vice president of advanced technology development for Cable News Network, CNN. In this position he was responsible for researching and implementing emerging digital television technologies. He was a former employee of WVEC television in Norfolk and came to CNN almost from its inception in 1982, with an extensive background in television engineering, having worked previously at both WHRO-TV in Norfolk and the Weather Channel. At CNN Al was one of the founding members of the field engineering and operations department. In this capacity, he traveled extensively throughout the world to engineer live broadcasts. In 1983, he was promoted to engineering manager for the CNN Washington Bureau. He oversaw facility construction and network operations. In 1990, he was promoted to director of engineering for both the CNN Washington and New York operations. He was instrumental in bringing CNN, Financial News Network, on air. Al was an avid sailor.

Survivors include his wife, Therese Diachok Friedman; his son, Marcus Friedman of Atlanta; his mother, Shirley Friedman of Norfolk; two stepsons, Andrew Diachok of Mayport, Fla., Mark Diachok of Vienna; two brothers, Neil Friedman and his wife, Abby, of Virginia Beach, Ervin Friedman and his wife, Cil, of Los Angeles, Calif.; three nephews, Ross, Howard and Michael Friedman.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Forest Lawn Cemetery by Rabbi Michael E. Panitz. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Northern Virginia, 11166 Main Street, Suite 405, Fairfax, Va. 22030, or the charity of donor's choice. H.D.
