VIRGINIA BEACH

St. Gregory the Great School will hold its first Christmas tree sale to benefit students from Dec. 4 through 15 at the parish pavilion, 5343 Virginia Beach Blvd.

Trees will be available Monday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Cost will range from $20 to $55 and the proceeds will go toward purchases for the new Technology Center.

Independence Middle School is planning its annual 5K race and one mile run/walk to be held in March. Sponsors and prizes for the event are being sought now. For more information on becoming a sponsor or to donate a prize, please call Debra Angellotti or Kelly Jordan at 460-7500.

State

The Hampton Roads Black Media Professionals are offering $1,000 scholarships to full-time African-American undergraduate and graduate students studying for media-related careers in Virginia colleges or universities, or Hampton Roads residents working toward media or communications degrees at any college or university.

Applications require a transcript, resume, recommendation letter and a 500-word essay on one of three media-related topics, such as: prime-time television's portrayal of African Americans, newsroom diversity, or strategies to preserve the black press.

For applications and information, call Eric Harrell, scholarship committee chairman, at 628-5797. Deadline for applications is Dec. 8. Winners will be honored Feb. 14 at the Ninth Annual Echoes of Excellence Awards Ceremony.

PORTSMOUTH

Portsmouth public schools have recently had some changes in administrative appointments:

B. Scott Howerin is now coordinator of information technology. William B. Whichard III is the assistant principal at James Hurst Elementary School. William Gibson is principal on special assignment at the Instructional Resource Center. Rosa Wells-Garris is acting principal at Woodrow Wilson High School. Marie N. Shepherd is acting principal William E. Waters Middle School. Raymond W. Lowther is acting assistant principal at Hunt-Mapp Middle School.
