- 5 Smart Highways
- When highways and vehicles "talk," driving becomes safer and more efficient. The university's Center for Transportation Research, together with the Virginia Department of Transportation, are spearheading plans for a smart highway project between Roanoke and Blacksburg.
- 10 The Big Pinch
- Funding cutbacks this year to Virginia's system of higher education have been equal to chopping the budgets of three universities from the system. Virginia Tech President James McComas and other university officials survey the damage and ask hard questions: Who will Virginia's colleges and universities serve? Who will pay for it? How?
- 16 The First Student
- Sixteen-year-old William Addison Caldwell hiked over two mountains to register as Virginia Tech's first student in 1872. Looking back over his memorabilia, writer Clara Cox gives us glimpses of student life at Virginia Tech in the 1870s.
