Linares earns fellowship

Spectrum Volume 17 Issue 10 - October 27, 1994

Lisa Linares of Lakeworth, Fla. has earned a fellowship at Virginia Tech for the excellence of her academic career. The State Council for Higher Education in Virginia selects outstanding graduate students statewide for State Graduate Deans' Fellowships from nominations by the students' academic deans.

Linares is a doctoral student in sociology at Virginia Tech, having earned a bachelor of arts degree in marine archeology at Florida State University and a master of science degree in women's studies from Mankato State University.

Her Ph.D. research will be in feminist pedagogy. "Since students have become more video and hands-on-oriented, we have to change our teaching strategies to get students interested in learning," says Linares. "Women have not been part of the power structure in our society. We need to correct that because we are losing half of the pool of energetic, able individuals."

Linares is a member of Sociologists for Women in Society, and the American Sociology Association.
