Tour DuPont canceled
Virginia Tech Spectrum, January 16, 1997The 1997 Tour DuPont bicycle race will not be held as originally planned. The primary sponsor, the DuPont Corporation, has withdrawn all funding for next year's race.
The tour has made an annual appearance in Blacksburg since 1993. The Virginia Tech campus has played prominently in the Blacksburg event, serving either as a start or finish location.
Local organizers had hoped funding for the tour, a production of Richmond's Medalist Sports, would be found in time to continue the race. With less than six months before the originally scheduled race time, it is doubtful that will happen.
