FACULTY POSITIONS
Instructional Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Assistant/Associate Professor. Faculty position in the fields of traffic
engineering or transportation systems. Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in
engineering, a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, and at least three to
five years of teaching or research experience beyond receiving their Ph.D.
degree. The appointment will be at the rank of assistant or associate
professor, depending upon the qualifications of the successful applicant.
Applicants will be considered for both the Blacksburg and Northern Virginia
(Falls Church) campuses of Virginia Tech. Successful applicants will be
expected to collaborate with or augment existing faculty in the group's current
areas of strength such as traffic engineering, multi-modal intelligent
transportation systems, transportation planning, or transportation management.
In addition to needing to be involved in teaching graduate courses and selected
undergraduate courses in transportation, systems analysis, or computer
application, the faculty member will be encouraged to participate in the
group's continuing-education programs. Interdisciplinary activities related to
the Virginia Tech Smart Road and its Center for Transportation Research will

NON-INSTRUCTIONAL
Office of the Vice President for Multicultural Affairs (VPMA). Assistant to
the Vice President for Multicultural Affairs. The individual will assist
the vice president in the administration of daily operations, project
management, and long range planning and analytical functions. This assignment
will include assistance with correspondence, special projects, and reports;
development of presentation materials; and other duties as assigned. The
incumbent will also represent the VPMA as requested at on- and off-campus
meetings and will interact on behalf of the VPMA with administrators, faculty
and staff members, students, and other constituents of the office. The
assistant will work collaboratively with staff members in this and other
university offices to accomplish the mission of the VPMA. Qualifications: A
master's degree in a relevant field and at least three years' experience in
higher education is required. The successful candidate will have superior
written and verbal communication skills and well-developed interpersonal,
organization, and analytical skills. Ability to value diversity and to
effectively interact with diverse populations is essential. Knowledge of
Virginia Tech administrative process and computer systems is also essential.

Center for Interdisciplinary Studies. Director of Programs in the
Humanities. CIS invites nominations for the position of director of
Programs in the Humanities, for a three-year term beginning August 1999,
renewable for one three-year term. This is an academic-year appointment that
carries with it a one or two-course release and an administrative stipend.
(Exact arrangements will be negotiated with the chair of CIS and the dean.) The
director is the chief administrator for the undergraduate curriculum in
Humanities, American Studies, Appalachian Studies, Asian Studies, Classical
Studies, Humanities and the Arts, and Medieval and Renaissance Studies. The
position requires innovative leadership in interdisciplinary curriculum
development, pedagogy, and outreach within Programs in the Humanities, with CIS
as a whole, and throughout the university. Qualified candidates should be
tenured faculty members at Virginia Tech who have taught in one or more of the
humanities programs in the past three years, and have a genuine interest in
promoting teaching, research, and service in the humanities and

Center for Academic Enrichment and Excellence. Coordinator of Athletic
Advising (revised job description). The position of coordinator for
athletic advising provides an opportunity for management and leadership of a
dynamic academic-support unit for undergraduate student athletes. The
individual selected for this position will be visionary and have the ability to
direct and manage change in a recently re-organized department. This position
requires experience in teaching and/or advising undergraduate students,
administration, budget management, and working with other university
departments. Primary job responsibilities include: administrative oversight of
the Office of Athletic Advising, budget management, leadership change and
growth in academic-support programs, supervision of five staff members,
collaborating with the Office of Academic Enrichment Programs, working with the
Registrar's Office and Athletic Department on academic eligibility and NCAA
requirements, advising student athletes, oversight for the Summit on Student
Athlete Success, and other duties as assigned. The position requires an
understanding of conceptual models of student success and strong written, oral,
interpersonal, and organizational skills. Candidates must have the ability to
work with student athletes, parents, coaches, faculty and academic, student
affairs, and athletic administrators. The coordinator of athletic advising must
have a doctorate and experience in teaching and/or advising undergraduate
students. This individual will report to the associate provost for retention
and academic support and will work with the Center for Academic Enrichment and

Department of Athletics. Assistant Women's Track and Field Coach. The
position is to assist the head women's track and field coach with
responsibilities associated with coaching women's track and field and
cross-country student-athletes. Coaching responsibilities for this position
primarily will be focused on the throwing events. Other responsibilities
include: preparing and executing daily workout sessions of all athletes,
evaluating student-athlete academic and athletic progress, recruiting,
organizing travel for away competition, completing meet entry information,
preparing for home meets, assisting strength and conditioning staff with the
development of weight workouts, and enforcing policies and procedures developed
by the women's track and field coach, as well as the Virginia Tech Athletic
Department. Candidates must demonstrate through knowledge of NCAA rules and
regulations. Previous intercollegiate coaching experience preferred. Bachelor's
