A story Wednesday about Guantanamo Bay Naval Station erred in
saying that Cuban refugees are treated like any other immigrants.
They have refugee status and, in addition to certain benefits, do
not require a sponsor to enter this country.
Also, a front-page graphic with that story should have said that
closing of the refugee camps leaves the base with little function
other than as a supply center for ships operating in the Caribbean.
A wrong locale was mentioned.
Correction published Thursday, February 1, 1996 on page A1 of THE
VIRGINIAN-PILOT.
