Eugene Chapter 1957 Rhododendron Show Report
Beth Leavitt, Secretary
The Annual Rhododendron Show of the Eugene Chapter was held in the shelter house in Hendricks Park, May 5th. Despite the doubt and skepticism of the members preceding the show, the weather was sunny and warm and the number of entries beyond expectations.
Due to early blooming, the showy trusses of many of the 'Loderi' group were absent. However the delicacy of color and beauty of formation was unsurpassed in trusses of 'Susan', 'Snow Queen', 'White Swan', 'Lady Montague', the multi-colored sprays of azaleas and many others too numerous to list.
An exact count on visitors was not available but the estimated figure was higher than for the previous years.
A sincere "Thanks" to all the people whose work and entries helped make the show a success and to Jack Simons we extend an extra "Thank You" for his lovely display of plants. I'm sure few of us have ever seen a more beautiful, full-blooming plant of 'Bow Bells' than Jack's, a trophy winner.
We are grateful to our very capable judges, Mr. John Henny, Mr. Rudolph Henny and Mr. Howard Slonecker.
Following the judging a buffet luncheon was served at the home of Dr. Carl Phetteplace.
A memorable part of the day was the formal dedication of the "Dr. Gick Memorial" which is a part of the Rhododendron Garden in Hendricks Park.
Marshall Lyons had the most points for show entries with Dr. Carl Phetteplace being a very close second.
The trophy awards were as follows:
- Allumbaugh Cup: (best truss in the show) Won by Dr. Phetteplace with 'Earl of Athlone'.
- Saunders Plaque: (best "Barto" plant or truss) Won by Dr. Phetteplace with a truss of 'Luscombei'.
- Phetteplace Silver Plate: (best truss or plant of any species) Won by Dell James with a plant of elliottii .
- Eugene Register Guard Cup: (best plant) Won by Jack Simons with 'Bow Bells'.
As more people become interested in the cultivation of rhododendrons and azaleas, each successive year brings a better show. The tremendous amount of labor which has been done by the city plus the work and donations of plants by the members for our "Rhododendron Garden," has been responsible for producing attractive surroundings for our Annual Shows.
