Suggested A.R.S. International Rhododendron Conference Tours and Visits

It is hoped that both our visitors from abroad and eastern visitors will first go to California, see the famed Oakland Flower Show, April 21 to 30, the beautiful Golden Gate Park with its Rhododendron Glen, the rhododendron plantings at the University of California, Berkeley and if time permits, a quick run down the enchanting Monterey Peninsula. Coming back to San Francisco join the Caravan Tour coming North along the Coast up through the giant Redwood Forests. In Northern California and Southern Oregon the native Western Azalea R. occidentale will be in full bloom, also the native rhododendron, R. macrophyllum . The tour will continue on through Oregon to Eugene where garden tours are being planned by the Chapter. Their Show will be seen in their beautiful rhododendron Display Garden in Hendricks Park overlooking the campus of the University of Oregon. The next stop will be Portland and the Conference which will culminate with the Portland Chapter Show in the National Test Garden May 13th and 14th. May 14th will be devoted to the tours as scheduled on the Registration Form. If there is enough interest tours will be conducted to Rhododendron Gardens, to Mt. Hood up the Columbia Gorge, out to the Coast and a Scenic drive of the City.

Leaving Portland and proceeding North there are five rhododendron shows being held by our Chapters from May 19th to the 21st. Tacoma, Seattle, Grays Harbor, Olympic Peninsula and Vancouver, B.C. Conducted tours of gardens and points of interest are being planned for visitors in both the Tacoma and Seattle areas. A visit to Point Defiance Park where the Tacoma Chapter has their rhododendron Display garden is a must and while in Seattle no one can overlook the noted University of Washington Arboretum nor the famous Ship Canal.  Across from Puget Sound is the famous Olympic Peninsula where the native rhododendron again grows profusely and a tour of the snow-capped Olympics will be an unforgettable adventure.  Just a little further North of Seattle is Vancouver, B.C., and a visit to the University of British Columbia will reward one with seeing a remarkable collection of rhododendrons, especially species.
