19th Annual Meeting of the American Rhododendron Society
Many special attractions have been planned by the Portland Chapter for the 1963 Annual Meeting on May 11 and 12. P. H. (Jock) Brydon, Director of the Strybing Arboretum in Golden Gate Park and a charter member of ARS, will be the featured speaker. The Portland Rhododendron Show will be held concurrently at the National Test Garden. On Sunday a special garden tour has been arranged.
The program will commence with the opening of the Rhododendron Show at 12 o'clock noon on May 11 at the Test Garden on S.E. 28th Street. The featured rhododendron this year is 'Naomi', which will be blooming together with hundreds of other varieties there. Competitions in cut trusses and flower arrangements will be held in the cool house.
The Annual Meeting itself will be held at the Multnomah Hotel. Registration, 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and a social hour starting at 6:00 p.m. will precede the banquet at 7:00 p.m. In addition to the business meeting there will be a symposium, "Rhododendron Varieties, Old and New." Mr. Brydon will speak on the Proposed Rhododendron Test Garden for the Strybing Arboretum and its confluence with the A.R.S.
The garden tour on Sunday will leave the Multnomah Hotel at 11:00 a.m. and will include the gardens of Mr. and Mrs. John W. C. Platt and Mr. and Mrs. James McDonald and the Bishop's Close at Elk Rock.
