QBARS - v18n4 The Front Cover
The Front Cover
Our cover picture for this issue was taken by Carl H. Phetteplace, M.D. of Eugene, Oregon in his own garden. The yellow rhododendron is the variety now known as 'Crest'. This was previously known as 'Hawk' var. 'Crest'. 'Hawk' was the group name given by Lionel de Rothschild in 1940 to all offspring of the cross R. wardii x 'Lady Bessborough'. In the 1964 Rhododendron Handbook six different clones are listed as having been named from this one cross or group variety, 'Hawk'. So far as we know the 'Crest' clone, described as primrose yellow, is the best yellow of the group.
