QBARS - v18n4 A New Display Garden for the East
A New Display Garden for the East
Leon J. Heuser
At the March meeting of the Princeton Chapter, the question of a long range project was brought up and after a discussion, it was voted by those present to sponsor a display garden in the Princeton area. At our April meeting, Carl Bahrenburg, director of grounds at the Hun School, said that he had discussed the idea with Dr. Paul Chesebro, headmaster and he offered a site on the school grounds. We then voted to donate part of the proceeds of our coming sale in May for the start of the development of the garden. John Obal, a member and noted Princeton landscape designer, generously offered his services to design the garden.
The Hun School is a private preparatory school, located in one of the oldest and finest residential areas of Princeton and surrounded by fine old trees. The main building of the school was once the home of John Winant, former ambassador to the Court of St. James. It is a stately old mansion and the site allotted to us is directly across the road from the front entrance. It is truly a noble location for a display of rhododendrons. The garden is easily accessible as it has frontage on three roads and can be seen by all who drive by. We feel we are very lucky to find such a lovely situation for our project. The school will maintain the garden and the chapter's efforts will be devoted to supplying the material and overseeing the general planting.
Carl Bahrenburg is chairman of the Display Garden Committee. If anyone wishes to donate plants to the garden, kindly get in touch with him at the Hun School, Princeton, N. J.
