QBARS - v24n2 Norfolk Show Eastern Regional Meeting
Norfolk Show Promises Wealth of Bloom For
Eastern Regional Meeting May 8-9-10
Talks by nine nationally recognized speakers, an all-day tour of private gardens in Suffolk and Williamsburg, and a rhododendron and azalea show which promises to be the largest and most comprehensive ever staged on the East Coast will highlight the Eastern Regional meeting of American Rhododendron Society Chapters to be held at Lake Wright Motel and the Norfolk Botanical Garden on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 8-9-10. The meeting is co-sponsored by the Tidewater and the Mid Atlantic Chapters
The prospects for a successful spring meeting seem unusually good with Norfolk a central geographical location for the 18 ARS Chapters East of the Mississippi and the Norfolk Botanical Garden and the associated Gardens-By-The-Sea providing an unsurpassed setting for beauty, scenic and horticultural interest. Actually a series of gardens, the Gardens-By-The-Sea encompass some 175 acres, with major blooming 12 months of the year. Azaleas and rhododendrons provide abundant spring color and the Eastern Regional ARS meeting will follow closely Norfolk's International Azalea Festival so that the gardens should be at or near the peak of the bloom. The gardens' auditorium is air conditioned and provides unexcelled facilities for staging a show. The Lake Wright Motel, offering 238 rooms, has an 18-hole golf course, swimming pool, putting greens, tennis courts, dinner theatre, and other superior convention facilities, all advantageously located with reference to the gardens and with convenient highway and air transportation.
Full information will be mailed to each member of the Eastern Chapters shortly. This will include registration fees, motel rates, program of Rhododendron Show and other essential instructions.
The program highlights, as arranged by the program committee headed by Alfred S. Martin, a director of ARS include:
