QBARS - v26n4 The Portland Chapter Show, 1972
The
Portland Chapter Show, May 13th & 14th, 1972
Mrs. Thomas Binford, Portland, Oregon
A deep pink 'Queen Mary' brought George W. Clarke the C. I. Sersanous Award for "The Finest Truss in the Show" at the Portland Chapter Show held May 13th and 14th at the Rhododendron Garden, Crystal Springs Island. All told Mr. Clarke won five of the twenty-two trophies making an excellent showing. Frank Mossman, M.D., won the Dr. Corbin Trophy for the total number of points.
The most surprised and delighted winner was probably fourteen-year-old Kevin Hicks who got the Frank L. McGuire Trophy for the "Best Novice Entry" (Class 36) for his 'Countess Of Derby'. His uncle, Robert J. Landregan, newly elected President of the Portland Chapter, claimed the Senator Hatfield Trophy for the "Best Red Truss" 'Leo'.
Sunny skies brought many visitors to the Gardens to view all the beauties of the show and the wooded setting.
Fortunately not many knew of the worries of the Show Chairman, Edgar Olson and his assistant, William Wilson, for the entries did not include many of the favorites. The tricks of he weather previous to show time seemed more numerous than usual, nd many of the familiar entries had passed their blooming period.
The annual dinner held at the Portland Garden Club was a gay social evening with seventy members and friends participating. Mrs. Siegfried Berthelsdorf, as chairman again this year, came up with some special entertainment with Mrs. Peter Hurst doing readings. Mr. Don Stanton from Wollongong, Australia, keen enthusiast on the subject of the Genus Rhododendron and good friend to many ARS members, was the noted guest of Dr. David Goheen, out-going President of the Chapter.
