QBARS - v28n2 Rhododendrons 1973 Book Review
Rhododendrons 1973 - With Magnolias & Camellias
Published by The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England
Edgar H. Olsen
This second annual publication in the new series of the R. H .S. yearbooks with emphasis on rhododendrons is a must for the libraries of professional nurserymen, botanists and gardening buffs alike in order that they can keep abreast of awards, new introductions, registration of plants as well as new hints on growing rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias.
The two articles "Cuttings for the Amateur" and "Pine Bark as a Rooting Medium for Cuttings" proved most interesting. Each author covered his subject most thoroughly in a well-organized easy to follow manner. Especially interesting was the theme that the propagator has a great deal of latitude in his methods particularly in the selection of materials for the rooting medium.
The contents of the publication, covering a wide range of subject matter: a plant trek to Nepal in 1973; gardens in the United Kingdom; frost damage in Scotland; use of fertilizers; cultivation methods; plant variations observed in seedlings; and even some thoughts on R. yakushimanum and the Species Foundation should provide something of value to all.
