1974 Seattle Rhododendron Show

The 24th Annual Seattle Rhododendron Show took place in the Bellevue Square on May 3, 4, and 5, 1974. In addition to eight Rhododendron landscape exhibits by commercial nurseries, 26 exhibitors entered 144 plants and 50 exhibitors entered 425 trusses. Amateur and commercial enthusiasts competed in open competition for all awards. The area of plants exhibited this year was almost twice as large as last year's exhibit and the truss display was also increased.
A special treat for show viewers this year was an outstanding exhibit of bonsai rhododendrons by the Puget Sound Bonsai Society arranged for by Dr. Edwin C. Brockenbrough, a member of the bonsai group and past president of the Seattle Chapter.
The following exhibitors were recipients of trophies. Frederick & Nelson Cup for best landscaping design, Garden Valley Nursery, Woodinville, WA; Bellevue Chamber of Commerce Trophy for best truss in show, R. "Crest" - Mrs. Joe Bailey-, Karl Korn Award for the best truss of a rhododendron hybrid either of whose parents are in the Thomsonii Series, R. 'Crest' - Mrs. Joe Bailey; John L. Scott Real Estate Perpetual Trophy for the best spray or truss of a deciduous azalea, Unnamed orange azalea, J. Paul Kelty; Seattle Trust & Savings Perpetual Cup for best plant in show, R. 'Dido' x williamsianum , C. J. Stevens, Everett, WA; Bellevue Square Trophy for best azalea plant in show, R. occidentale , L. J. Pierce; Nordstrom Trophy for best species plant in show R. augustinii , 'Barto Blue', L. J. Pierce; Novice Trophy for best plant entered by a novice, R. hanceanum nanum , Ralph Nichols; Seattle Rhododendron Society Annual Achievement Award for best new hybrid seedling, Yaku Sunrise #2 x R. elliottii , E. C. Brockenbrough, M.D.; The Clarence Bledsoe Memorial Award of $100 in cash to the best new hybrid rhododendron plant, not previously shown, and exhibited by its hybridizer, Yaku Sunrise #2 x elliottii , E. C. Brockenbrough, M.D.; Mrs. William M. Culliton Trophy for best dwarf rhododendron (hybrid or species), R. 'Rampo', Garden Valley Nursery; Seattle Chapter of Washington State Nurserymen's Association Perpetual Trophy for the best Washington named hybrid rhododendron plant, R. 'Halfdan Lem';, L. J. Pierce; Puget Sound Power & Light Perpetual Trophy for best educational exhibit, "New Growths", Ray Tyson; Lincoln First Federal Savings Sweepstakes Trophy, L. J. Pierce.
