QBARS - v29n2 Breeders' Roundtable

Rhododendron Breeders Roundtable 1975
Dr. Robert L. Ticknor, Aurora, Oregon

The 1975 Rhododendron Breeders Roundtable will open Sunday, May 18th, with a session designed to inform people who have not done hybridizing about the techniques and nomenclature used by hybridizers. This should enable them to understand and enjoy the talks which follow.

The morning session will feature reports on breeding toward specific goals. The results of the survey of Rhododendron Breeders across the country conducted by Dr. Clarke will be summarized to start the session. This will be followed by reports on the successes and failures in producing their ideal plant by several members. Hopefully people in the audience will comment on their experiences in breeding toward the same or other objectives as our speakers.

The afternoon session will feature reports on what should be done after the cross has been made. There are two exceptions to this. One will be Dr. Serbin's report on the Taliense series, some members of which have been hardy enough to grow out-of-doors in Connecticut. The other will be a report by Ted Van Veen based on his extensive files of propagation results. It would appear that certain parents produce offspring which are difficult to root as cuttings.

We hope that as many members as possible will stay to take part in this session. Actually you may learn as much at coffee break, at lunch or after the session from a fellow enthusiast as you will at the formal sessions.
